My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: NY
I was a "sub-contractor" for a company installing satellite dishes. I started in march 2011 and was let go march 2012. I feel being a sub-contractor that they can do whatever they want. I was convicted of burglary in 2006. Anyways, when hired I didn't have to fill out an application and I was not asked about my background. A year later the company we installed dishes for made my employer do back ground checks on all of us. I was fired due to my failed background check. Is this legal for them to do? To just fire me after a year even though when I was hired it was not even asked about? You would not believe how hard it is to find a job with a burglary as your back ground. Can't even get minimum wage jobs. I just want to know what my rights are and if it was okay for them to get rid of me. Once again I live in NY. This all took place in NY as well. What are my options? Do i just have to take it and move on?
