Default Can I Hire Another Lawyer, 3 Years Later

My question involves an injury that occurred in the state of: North Carolina
I was shot 3 years ago when I was 16. A few months later I turned 17. I had a lawyer who took the case because the guy who shot me was only charged with firing a gun in city limits. I was stuck with many doctor bills, hospital bills, therapy and was told I would probably not ever walk again. My lawyer at the time took the case until I turned 18 and then called me and told me he couldn't help me. I was so shocked from all he had said during our mettings how he would make this and this happen and then dropped me. What I'm wondering is if I am still allowed to retake this to court. I live 2 streets over from the guy who shot me. I really need money to pay these bills and move on with my life. I've been through alot of pain and suffering and at least think he should be recharged with the right charges. And to mention he had the 1 charge he got from the incident dropped. I need some advice...

I turned 20 this month. So it's been a little over 3 years since I was shot, that happened in April.

I am not positive but I think that due to this happening when you were a minor, you have until you are 21 to file a suit. I would at least contact some local lawyers to discuss this.
