Unhappy I Was Arrested Inside a Store and Charged with Shoplifting the Things Inside My Cart

My question involves criminal law for the state of: SC I was shopping in Wal Mart when I realized I left my debit card in the car. So I went to the front to ask a greeter to watch my cart while I went to get it. The secret security guy comes up with no id, ask what I'm doing & demands I follow him. Of course I refuse. The story ends with him asking the officers to arrest me for shoplifting (because I went passed the register with unpurchased items, 'his words) $240.00 worth of GROCERIES! Juices & snacks & a $300.00 coffee pot marked down to $99.00 that made up most of the 240.00 $2200.00 cash bond that I paid because I obviously couldn't afford $240.00 worth of groceries. Is this a real WalMart policy?

That sounds bizarre to me especially if the cart did not leave the building. Since you paid a cash bond it sounds like you're going to get a court date. Get a lawyer and fight the charge.

You realize that a person need not have exited the building in order for them to be convicted, right?

When the greeter was asked to verify your story, what did the greeter say happened?

Never got a chance to say anything to.the greeter. I was bumrushed. Never stole anything in my life. Over $5000.00 in my account at the time why would I start stealing groceries. Not big dollar items but groceries. & I didn't conceal anything anywhere

Have your lawyer see if he can get any video surveillance from the store, as it's likely to either show you looking around for the greeter or making a beeline for the exit.

if this story is true, sounds like another example of over-zealous lp employees.

fight this. hire an attorney. plead not guilty. fight any civil demand they try to force you to pay.

First of all, ignore Rebeka the spammer.

Now: You have to realize that most store Greeters double as Loss Prevention, and are located past the point of purchase.

And....there have been a number of people who have various medical conditions.....and go in, find their items, flee to their cars, claim their medical condition made them forget to pay....so as Mr Knowitall said - you want to get a Criminal Defense Lawyer, ask for Discovery, see what the security tape reveals.....slowing down to approach greeter, or hauling tail for the exit....
