My question involves criminal law for the state of: Utah
Firstly I apologize for the title, it's rough. But it's quite late.
There's this pretty common situation I see a lot, and I assume you do too. It's where the victim is told that if she/he contacts the police that they'll have their gang members/friends come and find a way to basically hurt or kill the victim.
For example, I have a friend that is being harassed by her ex-husband, he threatens her by saying that if she calls the police on him, or gets a restraining order against him that he'll have his buddies come and "do bad things to her".
How is this handled legally? How does the law make sure those "friends" don't come back? How does the law make sure that the victim is totally safe? Can it? Or do the police only do what they can? Obviously the victim doesn't want to move to another state, change her name, and all her information, just because of a domestic threat? Right?
If the law or police can't always be on guard for this person, how does the law expect them to defend themselves?
Just wondering, thanks.
