Default Roommate Lost His Wallet, His Credit Card Was Used

he said it was used in a gas station. Wondering what the chances are the cops would review tape for a gas purchase? I don't know what the amount was. I'm guessing pretty slim chance since there's bigger crimes out there.....

Also guessing if person still has the card, it would be confiscated or refused next time, since he has reported it to his credit card company.

(Believe it or not...this is the second time he has lost his wallet within 2 weeks! Last time he got lucky and someone found it and contacted him).

    Thanks.

It is unlikely the police will even investigate a few uses of credit card, now if he finds that his information is being used for a more elaborate identity theft they might be concerned.

Most likely the card was tested at a GAS PUMP. This is evidentially a quite common way for card thieves to probe cards with a reasonable amount of anonymity. There's unlikely to be anything tremendously useful in surveillance as opposed two had he tried using it at WALMART or online.

I've had credit card issuers call me on fraud alerts when I've used relatively infrequently used cards (or in one case the initial use on a newly obtained card) at automated gas pumps.

Since he's reported the loss, I would agree that the card should be refused the next time. Heck, I once had my card refused when there was trouble with the credit card reader, the clerk had to put the card through several times, and my bank read it as fraudulent use. I had to call and answer security questions before they would unfreeze it and allow it to go through.

was this an actual credit card or was it a debit or debit/credit card?

A person's liability varies with each but if I remember correctly, there is no liability incurred for the use of a credit card used fraudulently, especially if it is reported properly. Should your friend be billed for any unauthorized use, they need to dispute the charges with the credit card company.

    Thanks.

I have no idea what kind of card it is. I know he used it Wednesday evening when he took me to dinner. He called me yesterday to ask if I was still at the apartment, that his wallet was missing (I was taking my car to the dealership for recall work). Got home, looked around. Nothing. Went to the restaurant we'd been at, they hadn't seen it. Got home, he told me someone had used it for a gas purchase (I don't know where though). A lot of stations have it where you have to enter the zip code, but I guess with his wallet missing, I assume that means his license, too.

I had trouble with a credit card myself - strip was worn....very embarrassing to go through U-Scan, and have to give my bags to the clerk and say "my card won't go through".

He did get lucky last time.

He went to a concert. Lost it in the parking lot. Cancelled his card (at my advice).

The next day, we went looking for it. I was even thinking in terms of "if a thief found it...." so we searched trash cans/dumpsters.

That night....he gets a FB friend request "Dude, my fiancee's sister found your wallet. I work at (company), you can pick it up there". Everything intact.

I swear, this man needs a purse! lol

This is the wallet losing roommate,lol.... I'm really concerned about the identity theft danger I'm in because of the fact my Drivers License and Health insurance card were in my wallet also.
Please advise. Thank so very much!

P.S. It was a Visa Check Card, not a credit card.

Not quite clear what your question is. But if you haven't reported the theft to the three major credit bureaus, do so.
