Default Help before going to court

I was recently with a friend and was arrested for petty theft shoplifting. The amount of the items totalled about $360 some dollars. I have no crimal record, and I am very scared about this. It is not in my character to do something like this, but I take responsibility for being there and make a really bad judgement call. I want to do anything I can to keep this off my record. I'm on Ohio......does anyone have a suggestion? I am not sure what to plead, and what I could do to sway the judge to not put it on my record, I am more than willing to do a program or something like that, the city that the incident happened in does not do community service, I already called and asked about that. Please help!!!!!!

Consult a local criminal defense lawyer about the availability of diversion programs or the possibility of a deferred sentence.

Most likely, the prosecutor will put a deal on the table, usually probation and fines. Your lawyer will present the paperwork to you, and its up to you whether you wanna sign it or not. If you do, then you will go before a judge, and the prosecutor will state that you have accepted a guilty plea, and that they recommend probation and fines. In most cases, the only word you will have to say is "yes". On some ocassions, the judge may wanna know what is going on in your life, in which you just answer honestly and sincerely. I warn this because the judge can give out harsher penalties than what the prosecutor is seeking. Good luck!
