Default How Can a College Student Asylee Acquire U.S. Permanent Residence

    Hi,

My parents and I came to the United States in 2007, have filed for political asylum since and

are still awaiting a decision 5 years later. I've attended high school for 4 years in the United States and am currently enrolled in a

    four year university.

    1. Is there any way for my entire family to move away from the asylum route altogether and apply for permanent residency a different way?

    2. If NO to question 1, then is there any way for just ME to break away from the case considering I was under the age of 18 when asylum was filed?

    3. This corresponds to question 2, is a possible route to permanent residency through the fact that by 2015 I will have attended a U.S. educational institution for 8 years? Will that help me at all?

    4. If, not then what are my options are this point, except to wait for asylum decision?

    Your response is greatly appreciated!!

    1) No.

    2) No.

    3) No. You can attend school in the US for 20 years, and still wouldn't be any more eligible for LPR status than anyone else seeking the same.

    4) Unfortunately, that is your only option at the moment, unless you marry a US citizen. Even then, it's inadvisable to withdraw your asylum petition while you're waiting for your adjustment of status to be processed.

Is it even possible for me to exercise part 4? As in say I were to marry a U.S. citizen (I have been seeing someone for almost 2 years now), will I be able to apply for permanent residency through that route?
And if that's the case, my parents still continue to be in Asylum correct?

Thank you so much for being so clear with your answers and giving me such a quick response. You're extremely helpful!
