Exclamation Shoplifting at JC Pennys in Michigan

Well i am 18 years old and just moved to the state of michigan from florida. I was at the mall and for some stupid childish reason i wanted a pair of underwear. So instead of purchasing them i took them and walked out of the store. A guy came up to me and the person i was with and asked us to go with him. So we did and he asked us if we knew what they stopped us for and we of course said yes we havent ever been in trouble like this before and didnt want to get into anymore trouble. We handed the pairs of underwear to the security guard or whoever they are. We sat in there filling out papers saying that they are going to mail us a letter telling us to pay for the merchandise that we took. ( We took 14.00 dollars worth of merchandise. ) They never called the cops, the cops never came, they didnt tell us anything but that a collections agency was going to mail us so that we can pay the $14.00. They gave us a slip with all the information..our names, phone numbers, address, and the amount. They told us to go the the county police department or township i dont know what there called up here and give them the slip and get our fingers printed. I was told that you dont have to go up there and get your fingers print by a few people because the cops dont know that you are going up there. They have certain dates for people that are caught shoplifting to go up there and go through the whole mess. But than again i dont want to get into anymore trouble. But they didnt tell us anything about being charged with anything, or going to jail or court or anything like that. Only that we are going to be mailed by the collections agency for JC Pennys. Can anyone please help me. I really dont want anything on me record this will be my first time for doing anything wrong and like this and i am really scared. Please any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I don't know what to tell you about going down to the police station, somebody else will have to answer that one. As far as the collection agency for JCP goes, that will be a "Civil Demand" letter. It means that JC Penney's can recover the damages for your theft, even though you didn't damage the items. I don't know what dollar figure will be assessed but it will probably be a lot more than $14 bucks so don't be surprised.

well i ended up going to the police station cause i didnt want to get into anymore trouble that what i was in. The guy that took mine and my friends finger prints wasnt a bad guy...he kinda joked around with us and such. But they never told us if we were going to have to go to court or anything. I have heard that the store can charge up to 10 times the amount stolen which will only add up to about $140.00 at the most. So im not that worried about the amout. I am just worried about having to go to court and risk my parents finding out. The cop did tell me that the security guards in Flint, MI had bars ( which i dont know what that means) to arrest people. But all we did was sit in the little room and filled out papers...is that true?? Was i arrested?

They did get the items back though, we gave them back to them as soon as we got back into the room that they held us in. We were only kept for about a half an hour or so..

So you think this is a mitigating factor?

i dont think that they are going to go easy on me and my friend just because we gave the items back i just want to know what is going to happen to me. if thats what you mean. i know that there are going to be consequences for my actions i would just like to know what they are going to be. When my friend and I went to go get our fingers printed the cop was really nice and cool, he was joking around with us and everything but no one never once told us anything else that was going to happen to us...

My guess is that you'll never hear anymore about it. If you don't, consider yourself very lucky.
