Default Civil Demand Notice and Shoplifting

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York

Hi..Today i got caught stealing a shirt and shorts a total of $35. The cops came but he said he isnt gonna fingerprint or book me i was wasting his time just took down my name and license and told the LP officer to give me a Civil Demand and have them charge me instead they were both nice. But my question is after i get the letter and pay it do i have to still go to court. They never mentioned anything about it?

You just have to pay the $35 dollars; pay the money and you don't have to go to civil court in the future.

If you weren't (and aren't) charged, you won't go to court on a criminal charge.

If you receive a civil demand, you can pay it and resolve the civil claim or not pay it and see what the store does to collect the debt.
