Default Effect of Shoplifting Arrest on Employment

Well I was caught shoplifting a few months ago at a local grocery store. It was the first time I had ever done anything like this and what a big stuiped mistake it was. I have my court date on the 8th of sept, and I have hired a local lawyer and he says we are going to go for a misconduct charge or violation. Well my arrest was posted in the paper with the charge of petiet larceny under $20. And the police came to where I work last monday and arrested me because I never showed in court on the charge, now I never got anything saying appear in court and the rec showes that an attempt was made but they didn't have my apartment number so it couldn't be delivered. I did give everyone my correct full address. Well I am an assistant manager and yes I should have known better (related thread) full story as to what happened. My district hr came down to where I work and put me on suspencion without pay untill this is taken care of, can I expect to have a job when all is over with, do they have the right to suspend me without pay considering I was arrested on the charge because I didn't show up for a court date that I didn't know about in the first place. I know I made a bigmistake and it will never happen again, but it seems like everything is falling to shit in a handbasket all at once and I just need to see if there is any sort of light at the end of the tunnel. Comments, answers are greatly welcomed.

OF COURSE they can suspend you without pay for this. The fact that the arrest was for not showing up for your court date does not automatically grant you a free pass on employment issues.

For some strange reason, employers take a dim view of their management employees being arrested while at work....something about company image or what ever. I've known employees being fired for just such a problem it's called, "Conduct Unbecoming a Management Associate"....and in most companies and states they can do it.

With only a few exceptions, employers can fire people for almost any reason or no reason at all. Conversely, an employee can quit for any reason or no reason at all.

    Unhappy Employed who know

Well I had court on sept 8th and it went as well as one could hope for. They gave me an ACD adjurned considering dismissal, basically I be good for 6 months and it goes away the only people to be able to pull it up is law enforcement, and I also got 10hrs community service, I realy couldn't ask for anything better. As far as my employment goes that is another story. On sept 7th my employer put me on suspencion without pay untill my court findings, then they would make a decision on wether to keep me on or not. Well I faxed them a copy of the court paper work last monday, and I got a call from my district manager, and he informed me they are going to keep me on suspencion for the duration of the acd which is up in march, then they will make their final decission, and they are also going to post my job. This realy sucks I have so many bills and I need a job with a sal of 30k a year min to be able to pay those bills, and I can't find one. Is there anyone that knows of such a job in the 13440 area code, if so info would be great. Learned a hug life lesson and have realy learned who I am and who my real friends are throughout this whole ordeal.

I don't see how they can keep you suspended for that length of time, they have to fire you out right or bring you back. What they are hoping you'll do is get pissed off and quit, make them step up and do what ever they are going to do. It doesn't seem right.....you ought to look into it more.
