Default Becoming a Police Officer with an Arrest Record

My question involves criminal records for the state of: PA
i was arrsted for possesion with intent to deliver a controlled substance but the case was dismissed later that year. since i wasnt convicted can i become a police officer or would i have a better chance if i get the record expunged?

Without a conviction, there would appear to be no mandatory legal prohibition against you becoming a police officer, but I have to say that any prospective employer is going to be VERY interested in that report. Expunged or not you will be required to reveal that little nugget, and unless this was a juvenile offense and many years behind you, I cannot imagine that any agency will remotely consider you for a position.

Wait several years, maintain a good job history, continue to attend school and obtain a college degree (maybe an advanced degree) and do not get into any more trouble and maybe you'll have a chance a few years down the road.

The exception will be for law enforcement jobs, and even positions that require a security clearance. For the most part, expungement just limits PUBLIC access to your records, or that they not be visible for consideration in future criminal proceedings.

Don't know. Perhaps they never filed his case because he rolled over before they filed. perhaps he was a juvenile. Perhaps he was a dupe the first time out.

There might also be something else going on that you do not know about.

It might also be that agencies on the east coast have lower standards than we do on the west coast.

Like I said, there appears to be no statutory prohibition at this point, but, dealing dope is not something agencies are going to ignore. The longer the time between the criminal act and the application, and the more that you have done that shows responsibility, reliability and self-improvement, the better chance you will have.
