My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Georgia
I am really confused right now and in dire need of assistance on how to proceed. Citibank has a business credit card account with my name and social associated with it from April 2006 and of course I never paid it to date as the last payment on the card was 8/2006. Citibank has apparently mailed a 1099C to the IRS and the irs is saying that I must pay taxes of 3k in change for this cancelled debt that I was unaware of. Of course the amount will be taken from my refund for this year. However, I was wondering a few things:
Since the debt or cancellation of debt was file 6 yrs later can this be dismissed or not valid since the sol in ga is 4 yrs possibly 6? They filed this debt cancellation 12/11.
Am I liable for this credit card since it is owned by a corporation?
What is the best and quickest way to get my refund released from paying taxes on this 6 yr old debt owned by corporation?
Shouldn't they have notified me of this debt in writing as I've never received anything not even the 1099c I learned of this through IRS.
What laws have they violated as I know there must be some...Please tell me my options here.
