My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
To briefly describe myself, I am a Canadian medical student who will be graduating in May from a school in Quebec, Canada. I have not committed any crime before.
Here's my situation.
On Sat, I was checking out from the hotel I stayed at (one of the Hiltons) for my job interview.
I decided to go for a quick lunch at a local restaurant so I checked my luggage at the front desk and they gave me a claim ticket.
During lunch, I got a phone call from my airline telling me that my 5pm flight has been canceled but they can put me on an earlier flight that leaves in an hr.
I rushed back to the hotel. Little did I know, I lost my claim ticket.
The baggage person asked me to identify my bag, and asked to photocopy my driver's license.
He made a copy and made me sign the copy, then he gave me my bag back. I even made sure that the bag was mine by taking out my medical textbook in front of the baggage person but he told me to go away.
Then I rushed to the airport.
Problem is, I realized that I didn't sign anything specific on the copy (ie. no mention about the bag whatsoever).
What if they lose someone else's bag and try to frame me for those lost bags just because they have a copy of my driver license?
I am actually a Canadian citizen with a Canadian driver license. Basically, I have no contact in USA. Would they press a charge against me without my knowledge and I would only find out one day when my program does a background check on me? That would not be ideal.
Thank you so much. This is making me very nervous.
Evidence I have:
I arrived at the airport 45min later after leaving the hotel and went through the TSA without checking-in any bags because I was only carrying my own carry-ons.
The hotel might also have security cameras in the lobby.
