Default Re: Statute of Limitation for Shoplifting Around $100

I would suggest getting her a counselor. And making her get a job so she can learn the value of money. Take away privileges like the cell phone, computer, etc. Tell her trust is earned.

Also explain to her that shoplifting, fighting, etc., can cost more than a thousand dollars in fines, fees, etc. Also, it can affect her job and college opportunities. Even a future goal of getting an apartment (some will decline for criminal convictions involving people or property).

You could also look into getting her into an anti-shoplifting class.

You can tell her that I shoplifted one time - got busted. It cost me $2000 (including the lawyer), and has made it difficult to find work. Show her a job application - where it says "Have you ever been convicted of a crime"......ask her why a place would hire someone who checked "yes" over someone who checked "no".

Show her this site and some stories.....

Thanks for your help. All of your comments has been helpful. I will try to get her into a anti-shoplifting class and mediation. That job application idea is very good. I will try it.

Good luck to you. I hope those will be a wake-up call to her.

Tell her also...retailers lose over a billion dollars per year.

Also do you announce the statute of limitation to the officer or to the retail store. Thanks for the good luck. I think I will need it.

Can someone please delete or remove this thread?

I have no idea on that....probably to the court....

I don't have a chance to look for links right now, but share this with her:
    - Shoplifting raises prices for the innocent consumer. Between the losses stores sustain, and the expenses of hiring LP personnel, installing cameras and security systems, etc.
    - It costs employees raises and even jobs.

Stores really do not profit until the so-called "Black Friday" after Thanksgiving Day. The rest of the year is overhead, payroll, insurance, benefits....

Thanks for the information. I know all about the damages since my good friend owns a store. My friend has been swarm with shoplifters. What is the limit for civil demands? I heard civil demands are shorter than criminal. Do you think that making my daughter work as a loss prevention officer for my friend help her realize the damages she causes?

Until she is 18, she cannot be employed as LP.

Civil Demand limits vary by state, the amount stolen, etc. Some states have a limit of $500....others can go higher. That does not include court costs, fines. Costs for legal representation. Potential costs for stuff like Diversion Program, Community Service, Anti-Shoplifting Classes (which can run $400 each). Yep, if she were to draw Community Service, she would basically pay $10/hr to participate (they do have to supervise her, verify her hours....).

Shoplifting is very expensive also in that the store loses money; they need to raise prices to get that money back; they need to purchase and install expensive surveillance cameras; pay people to man those cameras, pay people to walk the floors...pay insurance in case any of the LP get hurt...pay for benefits for them.....

I don't think it would hurt her to work a job at all. Even flipping burgers at McD's, and then ask her how she would feel if someone stole her paycheck.....
