My question involves an eviction in the state of: NC

I own and live in a mobile home in NC. A few months ago I rented out a room in my home to some friends, a couple. We have no written contract or lease, just a verbal agreement that they would pay rent on a month to month basis, which they are in breach of for not paying the full amount of the rent for the past few months. They continue to get farther and farther behind in the rent owed to me.

The guy was unemployed when they moved in and he has not even tried to look for a job since. He just stays at home, smokes pot, and plays video games ALL day long. In the past week, I've learned that he was caught stealing from his "best friend." He is a liar and a thief and I wanted them to move out anyway. But now, I have to move back to my mom's to help take care of her. My plan is to move to my mom's and rent out the trailer as a whole, to an individual or family. I informed them that I would be moving and that they would need to move as well. They asked for some time to find a place, which I agreed to, but there has been nothing in writing as to how long they would have until they needed to move out. Since telling them that they would need to leave, I learned from his former best friend (mentioned above) that he has said that he was NOT going to move and that it would take a "legal eviction" to get him out.

This was a week ago, and they have made NO attempts to do any packing or finding a place, even while I have been packing my things and giving them subtle hints. I can't move until they have moved because I am concerned that they may trash the place after I have left. I guess I never really knew my "friend," but I don't trust him now at all. I am even worried for my pets safety. (My dog recently killed one of their kitties. She was deaf and didn't hear my dog growling as she got close to her while she was eating.)

I understand that they are considered lodgers, but I am unsure of what I have to do to get them out quickly, but legally. I have been told that I just simply have to ask them to leave, and if they don't then I can call the cops and have them arrested for trespassing. Others tell me that I have to give them a 30 day notice and then if they haven't left, I can call the cops. Still others have said that I must go through the entire legal "eviction" process with the courts.

I don't know what to do, and I certainly don't have the money to pay for a lawyer. PLEASE HELP!!
