Default Who Pays for the Cable Box

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Virginia

I live with two roommates. The roommate who organizes the cable bill asked me for 20$ contribution to pay for the new cable box (that we apparently needed). I am moving out in 5 months, and have lived here for 4 (I am on a 9 month lease). She has lived here for two years and will be living here at least another year.
I think she should pay for the entire new cable box. She can take it with her when she leaves. What is fair? Thank you.

Cable boxes cost more than $20. It sounds like she wants you pay a small portion of it, which is fair. The alternative is to rent one for the 5 months. That will cost more than $20 to you.

Most people rent a cable box from the cable company, and if there's a problem with the old box or if it's necessary to change the box in association with upgraded service the cable company swaps it for a new one. What's the story with this box - what is this fee actually for?
