My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: Missouri
I was affected by the Joplin tornado and lost everything I had. I stayed in the state of Missouri and continued to work my job for 2 months after the tornado. During this time I looked for a place to live and lived on friends couches. I could not secure housing within those 2 months because there was no place to live. Nearest place to live was in Springfield which was 60 miles away and I had no car. I decided to voluntarily quit my job 2 months later because I could not secure housing. I moved in with my parents in California and was supported by them for another month after. Since I wasn't able to find employment in California I filed for unemployment in Missouri. I was denied based on the fact of voluntarily quitting my job and not having a good enough reason for leaving. I went through my appeal hearing and my employer sided with me and even told the judge I deserved the unemployment. The judge said he didn't believe I had to quit my job. Is there anyone that can shed some light on this? I just don't understand how losing everything in a EF-5 tornado and not being able to secure housing is not a good enough reason to leave my job. Also, I currently reside in New York am I able to file in NY if Missouri denies my appeal?
