My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
I found a dog loose and took it home. I did find out who the owners were. I did not return the dog due to a history of abuse to the animal. Now, 8 months later, the former owners know I have the dog and have called the State Police. I have not yet met with the officer in the case, but he told me over the phone that he is interviewing people and trying to determine if I will be charged with larceny. I have no former offenses. I do have proof and witnesses of the animal abuse but I realize that this may have no bearing since dogs are considered "property." I have not yet been made to return the animal and I am upset by that prospect since I don't want her to go back to an abusive home. What can I expect and/or what should I be doing now?
