    Default Caught barcode sticker shoplifting

So today I tried to shoplift some items from Wal-mart and was caught by the manager on the way out. I attempted to put barcode stickers on the items I was paying for so I would pay less than what they were worth. For example, I put a $2.50 barcode sticker on an $8.00 item.

After I scanned the items (3) at the self checkout lane I was approached by the manager who told me the stickers were not supposed to be on the items and pulled them off. She then prompted me to pay for them without the stickers (at full price) and I did so with a credit card. I didn't want to put up a fight about buying them or make up excuses because I was caught and I knew it.

I paid full price for the three items (with my credit card) and left the store. I was completely embarrassed and will not be going back to that Wal-mart.

My question is will I be charged with (attempted) shoplifting even though I paid full price for the items?

I know I was caught and I'm sure the manager will proudly and rightly report her catch. They'll probably use my credit card information to track me down. I don't necessarily want to get away with it, but I'm curious what the consequences might be.

    Thanks for the help.

Did they allow you to keep the items after you paid for them?

Most likely nothing will come of the situation because it may be seen as a mistake in the pricing department. I have done pricing and upon occassion things do get mis-marked. Or sometimes little kids get bored when shopping with parents and play with the stickers. So many things occur that would make you a innocent victim of item sticker switching. Unless someone has you on camera switching the barcodes forget it.

It is unlikely that they intend to pursue charges if they didn't detain you or take your personal information for the police. I think you were saved by WalMart's new policy of not (normally) involving the police for a first offender between 18 and 65 who is caught trying to steal less than $25.

I would say that there is no chance that they thought this was an internal error by their pricing department.

Yes, I was allowed to keep the items.

There is no way they will think it is a pricing mistake. They probably have me on camera acting weird and being stupid. They didn't take my name down or anything, but since they I used my credit card I'm worried they'll find a way to track me down.

The items totalled $30.00 (including twizzlers that I bought). Everything was properly paid for and I wasn't detained or anything, but I'm still nervous. I definately learned a life lesson and will never do this again.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

Just a thought: would you like someone coming into your residence and helping himself to a few items?

I never thought of that, seniorjudge. Your comment is a fair and appropriate response to my juvenile actions. I made a mistake and I am completely aware that I was wrong. I joined this forum for helpful advice that I had seen a number of posters give.
