Possibly Caught Shoplifting

My question involves criminal law for the state of: NJ

I picked up 3 protein bars (about $2 each) from a supermarket. Upon realizing I left my wallet in my vehicle (I know, this is no excuse!)...I thought just this once it's not going to hurt to take them. I think all the cameras in the store shoot down the isles (I didn't spend much time looking around for them), so I stood behind a large display, put them in my pocket, and walked toward the exit. A man rushed past me to the isle where I was...then noticed him in the parking lot...I think he was writing down my license plate # as I drove away. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I think he was security. Waiting for the police to come knocking, but this happened Friday evening & it's now Sunday evening...I've heard nothing yet. First offense - never did anything like this before and will never again. Questions: Can I still be charged if I was not actually stopped by anyone and not caught with the items in my pocket? How long do I have to keep worrying? I know there may not be concrete answers to my questions, but any thoughts are appreciated.

That is why they took your license plate number. You can be charged with video proof.

We don't know what the store will do, or is doing or is not doing...

I'd wait a month to relax.

Yes, you can be charged still. If the cameras did catch you, and if the LP saw you and wrote down your info...yes, they can file a complaint with the police. They may even just keep it on file at the store in case you show up again. I would avoid that store for a while....
