My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Michigan
I'm 17 and I want to get emancipated. I just want to know if I do end up doing this if it will work or not. I'm 17 years of age, I'm currently in a structured transitional living program at a therapuetic boarding school but I am leaving to go home in the next 2 weeks. I have been at this boarding school for 13 months now and I'm actually graduating the program from that boarding school as well. To go along with graduating program, I am graduating a semester early and am projected to graduate In Janurary. I have around $1,500 saved up in a savings account and have a $15.00 an hour job waiting for me when I get home. I have a reasonable place to live and a way to pay for college in the fall. My dad does not plan on paying for any of my college and is not letting me get my drivers license until after I move out and turn 18. There are no plans for me when I go home so I am basically going to be sitting at my home for 8 months doing nothing. I feel as though I have proved myself at the boarding school and shown that I can live independently. I believe I would have a more productive 8 months before I am 18 if I got emancipated. My dad also does not trust me enough to get a job or have a cell phone. This makes it very difficult to decide and set out what I plan to do in the future. All my siblings and my step-mom do not get along with me and its not the most comfortable living situation.
At the age of 16, my grandmother tried to get custody of me from my dad, which was denied so I started to runaway constantly until my dad let me go. He ended up not letting me go and just sent me to the boarding school. I have learned a lot at the boarding school and realized that running away was a foolish thing to do. I feel as though I am being held back from what I am capable of. I can take care of myself and support myself and I believe I meet all the requirements for getting emancipated. Please let me know what would be the best option for me.
