Default Changing My Son's Last Name to His Father's Name

My question involves name change laws in the State of: TN
My son is 17 and has asked to change his last name to his father's name. When he was born we were not married and the father was not put on the birth certificate. Plus, the father is deceased. Will that make it harder for my son to change his last name?

Shouldn't be too hard. Of course when he turns 18, he can do it through the normal procedures.
