Default Fine Amount Misprinted on Ticket - Paid but Now Remainder in Collections

My question involves a traffic citation from the state of: California

I recieved a parking ticket for the amount of $5 which I sent in a check for and the check was cashed before the due date of the ticket.

I have since found out that I am in collections for the ticket. It appears that the printer used to print the ticket was malfunctioning an failed to print the right edge of the ticket. Hence my "pay amount" looks like $5, when it should have been $50, and my "amount due after due date" looks like $1, when it should have been $100.

I do have a copy of the original ticket with the misprint, but since I never recieved any correspondence (think they had an old address) and the check was cashed I assumed the matter was taken care of.

I feel like I'm not in the wrong here, I payed the amount that was printed on the ticket, but since it's already in collections I have no idea how to begin to contest this!

How did they get an "old address"? Had you failed to update your address on your vehicle's registration with a current address at the time you received the ticket?

You can try petitioning the court through which the ticket was to be paid to reopen the case and to allow you to pay, based upon their records of receipt of the $5 and your copy of the ticket indicating that you could resolve the ticket by mailing in the $5.

Problem with that idea is that "feelings" aren't likely to convince the DMV that you don't owe the amount due as it might appear on their records if/when the matter is forwarded to them! So come registration renewal time, you will likely have to pay that additional amount BEFORE the DMV will issue you new tabs. And they will not help you contest the amount... All they are doing at the time is collecting on behalf of the issuer!

Good for you. There is probably an address/contact info where you would normally contest the citation; that is a good place to start as you try and resolve this!

    Good luck!
