Can I take public pictures in a US city featuring buildings, stores (with their trademarks and logo visible), hotels, museums, restaurants, etc. and then use them on merchandise? No pictures of recognizable people of course.

The images are not protected by copyright, you as the photographer have those rights to the pictures.
The trademarks depend on how you are using them. If you take a picture of a Hilton and it's just coincidental to your business, you're OK. If you cause confusion that either Hilton made the item or endorsed it, you are infringing on their mark.
