Emancipation at age 17 in New York

I understand that in order to be emancipated:

* The minor must be aged 16 or older;
* The minor must reside independently of his or her parents;
* The minor must be self supporting (although public assistance or court-ordered child support payments made to the minor would not disqualify the minor from being recognized as emancipated);
* The minor must not be in need of or receipt of foster care; and
* The minor must be living beyond the custody and control of his or her parents.

Does this mean that if I have a job to support myself and find seperate housing I can just walk out the door at 17?

If my parents disagree with what I'm doing, would they be able to stop me?

What you describe is called "running away from home", and your parents could try to get the legal authorities to require you to return home.

If you move out with their permission or acquiescence, and they later try to require you to move home, you can attempt emancipation. If you move out with their permission and live in a safe, appropriate environment, there shouldn't be a problem whether or not you are emancipated.
