Default Cellular Call Claiming There's a Virus on My Computer

Anyone see any reason for concern when I receive a cell call and voice message from a well known internet carrier indicating my computer is infected with a virus.

BUT -- the cell phone carrier lists that call (online history date / time stamp) as 'me' calling my voicemail box... even though the call history on the cellphone itself show's the incoming call from the above referenced internet carrier.

AND -- the land based internet carrier does not even know my cell phone number as a contact number for me. (they have no idea of my cell phone number -- it's only a few weeks old)

    Thanks... Thoughts?

You can contact whomever called you to verify that the call was real and, if you want, to instruct them not to call again.

If you believe a crime occurred, make a report to the police. I'm not sure what your concerns are in that regard.

You didn't receive a call from a well known internet carrier.

    That's a world-wide known scam. I didn't know they left voice messages...lol

Next time they call tell them "Oh MY gosh! What's your address in Nigeria and I'll send a check right over!"

You could maybe inform the internet carrier.

Oh, and your computer doesn't have a virus.

Though of course, it always might, but the people calling you don't know that.

Internet carrier comcast escalated within seconds to investigate. (why? >>) My "land line" number associated with my account has a history of activity with police -- which is connected to cell phone activity connected to crimes "charged" (but were false)... Criminal in nature? not sure but what I do know is my wifes ex. writes software for Intel as a subcontractor... Has an axe to grind and child custody in and out of court for years upon years...

Is he at it again?.... We'll see what comes of the data... All I know is my cell phone carriers - online call history, indicates I called my own voicemail (called myself)... yet the cell phone itself tells me I received a call (and voicemail) from comcast telling me I had a virus... Yet comcast does not have my cell number.

Caller ID spoof? aka "news of the world"? to hack cellphone / download contacts / vmail? I don't know... Comcast asked for my cell recording (gave it to them)... They're looking into it & I suppose my next step is to work with them and the cell carrier to figure out the "reason" for the 2 different data sets & see where the bogus call came from... Whacky! for sure...

I really don't understand most of what you just wrote.

But you should just google this whole "phone call informing me my computer has a virus scam" and see if it sounds familiar.

It all probably has nothing to do with 'your life'.

    Nope, not even close...

This was a phone call from comcast. (1800-comcast on cellphone caller id)... voicemail stamp from cell carrier ID'd as comcasts number... Voice on STD message also as used by comcast.

Only problem is my "cell phone" carrier lists the call as "me" calling myself (logging into voicemail) but cell phone carrier said call didn't connect.

Other problem is comcast does not have my cell phone number... "You can't get high speed internet accounts on cell phones from comcast..." and they don't have my 5 week old cell number to call & notify even if I did have a virus on my computer... (which I doubt I do...)

have you ever used your cellphone to call Comcast? If so, they have your cellphone number.

Comcast does not call people to tell them they have a virus. They communicate via email. They do send out warnings occasionally but they do not scan your computer to be able to know if you have a virus.

When we moved we purchased phone service through Comcast, and told them not to transfer the old phone number. Many months later during a call to customer service they asked me to verify my identity by sharing my phone number. "That phone number isn't in our records." That's right - they still had the phone number they knew I didn't keep as my 'official' number, and had no record of the Comcast phone number they assigned to me via the very service I was calling about. I'm not saying that they couldn't pick up a phone number through caller ID, but... I would be very surprised if they're anywhere close to that organized.

    These are interesting:

    http://forums.comcast.com/t5/Securit...d/td-p/1075533

    and:

    http://customer.comcast.com/Pages/FA...ookieSupport=1

Does that sound more familiar? You might be the victim of marketing....as to why Comcast might develop a marketing plan which reads similar to a worldwide scam...I'm not sure...

Are you sure that your number has never been associated with Comcast in any way?...
