Default Age 17 with Beer Outside

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

Some guys and I had a few beers outside a private residence (dumb to have alcohol outside, I know). We were all underage except for one person, I believe. Two cops came and gave everyone else open container charges, but they gave me an MIP, I'm assuming because I'm 17. I will turn 18 before my court date. The officers were friendly and didn't put me in juvenile hall, and they told me I would probably pay a fine and take an alcohol education class. They said nothing about parent involvement though. Is there anyway to not bring my parents into this situation?

Usually, the first question a judge asks a minor is "where are your parents?" However, you are going to be a legal adult at the time of trial, so that may not be an issue.

    May not.

I would man up, though. Having your parents there shows remorse for your actions and will help in court.

No. Your parents WILL be involved.

    Sorry.

And if this was for W&I 25662 then you can expect your license to be suspended as well, unless some form of diversion is available.

Ok thanks to both of you for your answers. I spoke to some people and there is diversion in the form of classes (I believe) in my county. And if my license still gets suspended, well I don't have a car and I took myself off our family's insurance to save money since I'm in college. So I guess I don't really lose that much there. Thanks again.
