My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York, specifically, New York City.
I am at the end of my second year of a lease. At the start of it I paid a deposit of $1650(equal to one months rent). At the end of the first year the rent was raised on the renewal from $1650 to $1750. This year when I got my renewal forms the rent is raised to $1900 and have listed I have to pay a $1900 deposit in addition.
Is that allowed in New York City? Can I request that my previous deposit be returned/rolled into the new deposit? I have never heard of anywhere requiring a full new deposit on an apartment where they are already holding a deposit from the people who are already living there.
