    Default Virginia Emancipation

My question involves juvenile law in the State of: virginia
Im 16 i live in virginia and i want to be emancipated. Life at home isnt what is should be and life has forced me to grow up before my time for say. I have to options i suppose i have found appartments to live in or i can live with some friends/roomates. I have a sufficient job which provides me with an income of 500$ a month. I live in a small town so thats a decent living for here what are all the requirements of being emancipated anyways?

$500/month is not going to convince a court that you can support yourself. It's not a decent living - anywhere in the US.

You need to be able to show the court that you can pay full market rent, utilities, clothing, food, health insurance, transportation, all sundries and other expenses - and still keep better-than-average grades in school.

Please read this forum some more.

What are you expecting from life that isn't currently what it should be?

Ok fair enough, i live with a single mother with 3 kids me being the youngest and i have a sibling who mooches off my mom causing tention between everyone. Im always arguing and fighting with her over things that really dont matter. We struggle from month to month in bills and everything because she does not work, the reason i only make 500$ is on due that i work part time and attend school regularly. Are there any other options? I have friends as stated before that have a apartment and the rent is 300$ a month but emancipation is solely living on your own correct?

I really want to be able to make desiscions on my own and not be harrased for the desiscions i make. I want to start making a life for myself and not be miserable doing it... I have had thoughts of harming myself due to the stress living with my house hold brings. I am willing to do whatever it takes to become emancipated

Emancipation has never been intended for teens who are unhappy where they live. The court certainly won't emancipate a minor who has or is threatening to harm themselves.

PLEASE read the other threads in this part of the forum before you post again.

You will find that judges (and, for that matter, this board) do not respond well to the teen age answer of "if you don't let me do what I want to do then I will hurt or kill myself".

It shows immaturity inconsistent with the wish to emancipate.

And you think emancipation is going to fix that? Are you under the impression that childhood is meant to be innocent and carefree, with no worries or responsibilities? Nice fantasy, too bad it doesn't jive with reality.

    Turn 18.

Look, every teenager is convinced that "life is not what it should be". Let me clue you in: Being an adult SUCKS. Working hard to maintain a good life for you and your family is EXHAUSTING. You think you're stressed out now, when someone else is responsible for providing the roof over your head, the clothes on your back, and the food on your plate? Wait til you get a load of the stress of doing it for yourself. And gods help you the first time you need to go to the ER because you've broken a bone or contracted an infection...or had a heart problem, and you've got no insurance.

Emancipation is not and never was and never will be intended for minors seeking "early release". It is for minors who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in the extraordinary circumstance of needing to be able to legally enter into contracts in order to continue to care for themselves. Think "My parents died in a car crash, and I need to be able to sign contracts so I can take over the mortgage", not "my life sucks, I hate it here".

I find it amazing you don't have a responsibility to assist your family. Who was it that fed, clothed and housed you until you obtained that job? Now you want to dump your family like yesterdays leftovers.
