Charges for Petty Theft

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
I was in a store with a family member and we were both walking around when she saw some jewelry that she wanted. She slipped them into my purse and we kept walking around the store. After walking around the store i went up to the cashier to pay for some stuff i wanted to purchase and she took my purse and walked out the store. About five minutes after the store security came back in with her. I then got out of the line to see what was going on. The security was being rude to me and he told me that i needed to leave the store. I did not leave beacause we were together so am not just gonna get up and leave here there. The cops were called and in and we were both given a ticket with a court date. We went to court on that day but our names were not on d list so they told us a letter would be mailed to us from the D.A office saying when we should go back to court.
I am scared of what might happen because i am in the Military and i have a lot to loose.PLEASE HELP
