Post One LLC with Multiple Ventures, How Many EIN's Do I Need

My question involves business law in the state of: NC

I have a plan to establish a few new ventures under a new LLC, but I have a question regarding structuring a LLC and its dba's. Should each business dba'd have its own EIN and should the LLC have a EIN of its own? I am starting a transportation company (which will have employee's), the other business will be a printing company (which will have a few employees periodicly). There are likely to be other ventures dba'd under this LLC in the future, but I would love to understand how to structure this LLC and the dba's to be formed under it.

Another question I will be keeping separate financial books on each venture as all profits will be directed to the parent LLC company and I will recieve compensation from it the parent company, or should it be from each of the separate dba's?

A dba isn't an entity in itself, it's merely a fictitious name for whatever the entity really is (your LLC in this case). Your accounting is done by the LLC (you can keep records segregated if you like, but for taxation and other issues there's only the LLC not three separate business entities). In this situation you need at only one EIN, even if you have multiple "businesses" operated by the LLC.

As said, a dba is not an entity. It is only a fictitious name that is owned by the LLC. It is all one business. Of course, if you have widely divergent business operations, you will have lots of fun getting liability insurance as the risk factors are all over the place.
You should speak with a business attorney. And no, you can't have a EIN for a dba.

I had LLC's and S Corps operating different businesses, and to keep the businesses separate, I had DBA's set up. The LLC itself has an EIN#, but each DBA does not.

But if you go to the bank to set up bank accounts for the DBA operation, you'll need to bring along the DBA registration along with other information for the LLC as required by the bank. For my S Corp for instance, I started off as a computer consultant company, but later on, the wife started a mail order business, and we set up a DBA for that.

For accounting purposes, we keep our books with Quickbooks, and each business unit is assigned a class so distinct P&L's can be generated, but for tax reporting purposes, it is the consolidated P&L used. How you allocate personnel expenses, or any other expense, can be done a number of ways. One company I worked for set up a department called "Admin" for Adminstrative department, salaries and benefits are all paid out and booked in Admin, then on a monthly basis, the accounting department would allocate the expense out of "Admin" to operating units via journal entry. Any other expense that needs to be split also goes to "Admin", such as rent.

Thank you both. I would appreciate more insight if possible.
