Default Unknowingly Had 2 Student Loans

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Georgia

A few years ago I was going to college and receiving 1 student loan from nelnet. I took a few months off for pregnancy and returned and received a student loan. After this I realized I couldn't manage family and school so I deferred my payments so that I could return here and there to finish off school. During this deferment my loan was shifted to 2 lenders ending with great lakes. I received a letter in the mail from nelnet and great lakes stating they had taken over the loan. I had never received a statement from great lakes detailing the amount owed I just kept deferring or returning back to school using hope and other financial aid and not using the loans.

I recently pulled my credit report and discovered that there were in fact 2 loans. One from my first trip to school and then the one great lakes purchased for my returning semester. I have been in default of this first loan for over 2 years now. I realize it was my responsibility to keep up with all this but life happened and I just trusted the letters sent to me and my financial aid advisor who told me that every time I returned to school and used my loans, it just added to the loan. Nelnet hasn't sent me anything further regarding the loan since they told me great lakes bought it.

My credit report stated that the loan is reported to the government. I would like get back in with nelnet and start making payments but I'm not even sure this is possible at this point. I called nelnet and they refused to give me any info because the name on the acct is my maiden name and they said they cant verify my social... I am currently about to file bankrupcy and yes I know my loans are not filed under this, but can my lawyer help to resolve this issue or do I just leave it with a claim filed against the government. The way I understand it is that they take it out of your taxes but as I don't work, I don't file. My husband does and he claims me. I don't care if they take it out of our taxes I want the loan to be paid off... I'm just soooo confused on what to do. And after the bankruptcy I don't want to have the negative loan on my credit report.

If you want to try to settle the debts with your creditor(s), contact them and start negotiating.
