    Default Minor Caught Shoplifting

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York

Today I was caught shop lifting at target with my friend. I'm 16 and she's 17, my other friend who also shop lifted didn't get caught. I stole one nail polish and my friend stole $80 worth of things. While in the waitin room, my friend cried but I didn't, so the target worker thought I had stolen before, but I swear I never have. They put all the merchandise together and charged us both the total ($87). They also said we would be getting a court letter in the mail. I was wondering if it will go on my record, or if it will affect me when I apply for college

Your third friend may face charges later. Target has excellent CCTV.

You need to tell your parents. You will be needing to pay a Civil Demand. As they said you will be getting a court letter, that means fines and court costs, too. I don't know the laws for New York, but your parents should talk to a lawyer about keeping that charge off your record. Yes, it can affect college, apartments, jobs......

Thanks for your quick reply! They actually said that it is probable that I will get a court letter. What are the chances that I won't? Does it affect college, jobs, etc very badly? I'm really worried because I will be applying to college this coming year.

It would affect Federal Financial Aid for students, and most scholarships.

Job wise....shoplifters are lucky to flip burgers at McD's. Retailers don't want a thief handling their merchandise or money. Nursing - hospitals do not want a thief around pharmaceuticals, or patients with a purse or jewelry. People don't want a thief cleaning their house....you get the idea.
