Default Police Contacted the Dean of My College to Inform Them of My Arrest

My question involves police conduct in the State of: New York

I was arrested and charged with criminal trespassing and assault. I did trespass, but I did not assault anyone. The next morning I had a voice message on my phone from the dean of my school telling me to "come in immediately". I went to the deans office as soon as I could and the dean was not there. The associate dean informed me that I need to make an appoint with the dean and that the police department contacted them and said what happened. Now I am terrified that I may be punished or thrown out of school. After I was released from jail I noticed that my school ID card as well as my drivers license was missing. I contacted the police department and they told me that they do not have the drivers license and that the school ID was given back to my school?

I would like to know why the police did this? Do they even have a right to do this? I am a legal adult. They even took my school ID from me.

As an adult, the fact that you were arrested and even some of the surrounding circumstances are a matter of public record. If the arrest occurred on school campus, all the more relevant.

If you feel the officer was malicious or unprofessional, you can speak to the employing agency and make a complaint. But, since he could publish your arrest in the newspaper there would appear to be no wrongdoing by informing the dean of your arrest.

    Thank you.

Does my school have any right to kick me out for this?

That, I can't say. If it occurred on campus, they probably do. If the school has an enforceable code of conduct, they might be able to. You may haqve to do a little reading to determine what the school's policies might be.

I will say that most colleges have taken a very close look at violent crimes in the wake of the various shootings and incidents on campuses across the country.

    Did this happen on campus?

Why did you get arrested if you didn't assault anyone?

You will probably be placed on Probation, if you indeed did not assault anyone.
