My question involves criminal law for the state of: California (San, Francisco to be precise)
So, I just got a question about fine for shoplifting. I won't lie, I just recently got caught shoplifting at Wal-Green and nothing I say could excuse the fact that I did something like that.
But to make the long story short, I was stopped as I was going out and the security lead me to the room and asked me to land back what I took, and I did. The security guard was nice though, and he explained to me what happen. He just that if I cooperate (which I did) he said that no police will be involve and my action will not go on my record. He asked me to sign a form that said I am banned from Wal-Green (policy about trespassing) for about a year or so and he took my pic. He then said that I will receive a mail for the fine and it is just to pay back the item I've stolen (which was <$10). And I wished him a nice day and he let me off. I will only be sue and have to go to court if I don't pay the fine (but of course I will). So my question is, how much will I be fine?
The reason why I ask is because I was told that the amount will be just the cost of the item I stole (again which was <$10). But later I found out that the fine can range between $50-$500 depend on the store you stole from and the state. I just want to know (from experience) how much you guy get fine for stealing an item that is not even $10. The reason why I ask is because if the fine is going to be $200+ then I will need to start saving up money asap to pay the fine. Any feedback will help.
