My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Virginia
Myself and one other person rented a townhouse in Virginia. Having been friends for some time we both signing on to the lease together as tenants with one rent payment, and we then split the payment between ourselves and a third tenant that we have a sublease with.
Recently the tenant I signed the lease with lost her job and then the landlord called to say the rent check she sent in (combination of all three payments) had bounced. I haven't been able to get in touch with her since. I'm concerned because we both signed on for one payment and didn't have written anywhere that the payment was split or how it was split, so if my roommate continues to not pay her share what are my options to try and get back the money I've lost and remove her from the house so I can rent to someone new? Where should I go for help? What do I do to start this process?
