Default Where to Find Divorce Documents

My question involves a marriage in the state of:California
I married in California in 1992. I am from England.
Left spouse in 1994. Spoke with spouse in 1995 when he told me we were divorced.
I now want to re-marry but cannot locate the divorce he said he filed.
I need the proof of divorce not only to re-marry but the divorce documents are necessary for me to obtain green card. Any ideas on how I should proceed?

Start with the county where the divorce was finalized. This will likely be where the two of you were residing, or where he was residing at the time you split. That county should have the record of the dissolution.

All counties in CA have contact information on-line so you can probably get started with a few phone calls. Keep in mind that some counties have furloughs in place due to budget cuts, so you may not be able to get through tomorrow (Friday). You have little more than 2 1/2 hours remaining to call today.

    Very odd.

While it might not be computerized given the age, there should be a record on file.

Could he have filed it in a different county? Were you ever served with any prof of the dissolution? It is not uncommon for papers to be filed with a lack of followup by the parties resulting in no action.

Unfortunately it's also not uncommon for people to lie. There is a chance that a divorce never took place.

It might of been filed in another county. Maybe there was no follow through and the divorce never took place. I guess we could do the divorce now, can I file a divorce without knowing where my ex is. It's been over 10 years since we spoke.

Your right it might of never took place. Thank You

That might be more difficult with you in the UK. That's something you may have to speak with a divorce lawyer in CA about. I am sure it can be done, but it might take time as there will be requirements for public notice, etc.
