Default Old Medical Bill Preventing Us From Closing On Our House

    Hello and Help!

My husband and I are purchasing our first house, closing was going to be today at 3:30. On Friday at 2pm we learned that my husband has an old medical bill on his credit report that needed to be taken care of prior to closing. We attempted to call the attny. that is handing the collection and did not get through to him until this morning. We explained our situation and the attny. told us that because it has been 6 years, he need to look at the collection and figure out all of the past due interest and would get back to us next week with the correct ammount due. We feel like this guy has us by the "you know what" and basically he is going to tack on a ton of interest, turning this 600.00 bill into 1200.00!! Not to mention are closing could be delayed until next week!
    Any suggestions?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Actually, you've had his client by the "you know what" for 6 years, waiting for their money! You will probably get hit for the principle amount, plus all the interest, plus attorney's fees, plus court costs. In other words, it's more than likely going to be far more than $1,200. If it wasn't for the "closing," you would never have called the attorney to take care of this debt.

You did this to yourself. So, don't blame anyone else for the amount you're eventually going to be paying.
