    Default Minor Was Caught Shoplifting

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Louisiana

I recently shoplifted from Icing, an accessory store. I shoplifted around $21 of cosmetics. I was caught in the act and I had my ID taken for information. The cops were called, and I have to go to court and pay a $20 fine. This is my first ever offense. Will this go on my record? How will I be punished? And what will I have to know before going to court?

If you are found guilty it will go on your record.

You will be punished with fines as you probably don't have a bad criminal record as of present.

You should have the option to plead guilty or not and may be able to get a public defender.

We have a great board member here who may also provide input soon. Just be patient.

    What is your age ?

Plead Not Guilty, ask for a public defender. There is a fee for the P.D. also. Ask the P.D. about a Diversion or First Time Offenders program.

Aside from court fines, you will also receive a Civil Demand from the store or it's lawyers. Pay that.

I assume your parents know, but if not, you need to tell them asap.

I'm 15. I'm new to this whole thing, so excuse me if I'm ignorant, but how do I plead not guilty to something I already admitted to?

Because it is your legal right.

    Without overwhelming you....

Plead Guilty....there is a minimum punishment the judge must give you.
Plead Not Guilty....there is a good chance of a plea deal to a lesser charge; or a deal such as a First Time Offenders program, or a Diversion Program

I'm not a lawyer...but at 15, you may have a chance to go to a peer court and just get some community service.

Question Re: Minor Was Caught Shoplifting

Please forgive me for asking so many questions, but when do I request a First Time Offenders Program or Diversion Program? Do I request these before I go to court? And what is involved in these programs? Thank you so much for your help.

You request these via your lawyer or public defender.

Basically, it is a program that after a period of time will seal your criminal record. Yes, the program costs money. It may be $400 and you perform Community Service, or probation.
