My question involves criminal law for the state of: California.
My 13 year old daughter and two of her friends were caught shoplifting $8 dollars worth of merchandise from a large well known retail chain store. A female store employee, who was the witness for when the girls took off the stolen merchandise, took it upon herself to contact some friends of ours and told them that our daughter was arrested for shoplifting. Needless to say, the people she told didn't keep quiet and told some other people so now we have bunch of rumors going around our community about the girls and the events that occured that evening.
The girls and I all understand what they did was wrong, but shouldn't that store employee be held to some kind of confidentiality agreement? I have tried contacting the store on several occassions regarding the matter and keep getting the run around. Do I have any legal recourse in this matter?
