My question involves an eviction in the state of: California

An unlawful detainer was filed June 24th
I received a summons on July 2nd via the mail
I received a copy of the request for default judgement July 2nd via the mail.
I go to the courthouse to respond to the summons to find out that a default judgement had been entered in this morning July 7th

I spoke with a paralegal and she said this is nothing I can do about it besides filing a motion to set aside the default judgement and request a trial date OR I can file a lawsuit against my building oners due to an illegal eviction. They lied to the court stating that they served me with the papers personally on June 25th...I had no knowledge of said summons until I received them in the mail July 2nd, so today would be my 5th day to respond. Should I file a lawsuit for an illegal eviction against them as well as a motion to set aside default judgement? What are my chances with these two options?
