Default Open Container at Beach in Santa Barbara

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California.

I was charged with displaying an open container of alcohol on West Beach in Santa Barbara the evening of the 4th of July. Prior to this incident, I have personally witnessed countless events held at this very beach involving beer kegs and plastic red cups in everyone's hand. I had been told by many people that it is not illegal to consume alcohol at the beach, so long as it is not in a glass container. However, I discovered the hard way that this information is untrue. I am in search of some legal advice on possibly fighting this ticket. Is there anyone who can do to help me out?

Unfortunately, "I listened to my stupid friends" isn't a defense to the charge. You may want to see if you qualify for a deferral.
