Default Employer Demands Money for Resigning

I had signed an offer letter from my company which mentioned in the event i do not give 60 days notice I have to pay $5500 in penalty.

I want to resign in period of 2 weeks but i dont want to pay $5500

Can a company in USA ask for $5500 incase notice period is not served ?

Will sending a letter to company through an attorney be helpful ?

    Regards.

You didn't furnish the name of your state.

You might take the offer letter to an attorney for their review & advice.
