If Something Was Bought for Me Do I Have to Give It Back

My Boyfriend and I of 6 years, just broke up, we have 2 kids together. He bought me a computer in 2010 and it was for me, it was paid with his credit card, and we completly paid it off at tax time in 2011. I have always been a stay at home mom, so he has always gotten to claim the kids and me on taxes. An I took my computer when he kicked the kids and I out of the house. The computer has everything of mine on it. Pictures of my family and he only used it to go onto ebay. An now he is threatening to call the cops on me for takin my computer. Do I have to give the computer back?.....

You are now understanding why living together without the benefit of marriage can be a poor idea.

If the computer was a gift to you, it's yours. If it was purchased for the home, you have a mess. If it was purchased for himself and he allowed you to use it, it's his.

I doubt the cops will get into the middle of the mess the two of you have created. They are not going to want to try to figure out who owns what. I doubt they will see anything as criminal and will refuse to act but rather suggest you take this to a civil court.
