Default What Are the Possible Repercussions from Getting Caught Shoplifting

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey

i'm 26 years old and was caught shoplifting today. i know, i've been beating myself up about it already and can't feel any more embarrassed and horrified about it. i won't go into details but it basically comes out to about $51.something and when i was stopped by the loss prevention officer, i was basically taken to the back of their office, they took a picture of me and of the stolen items. they asked me for my full name, my id, my address, my phone number, date of birth and social security number. i was a little hesitant about giving my social sec # but i didn't wanna make it any harder for myself so i did. i was asked to sign a paper basically saying i am banned from all walmart and would be charged as trespassing if i do. then they called in their "head quarters" for a case # but they never called back. instead the police came and wrote a report of some kind. the police told me that i wouldn't be going to jail but the report (i guess the complaint with case # and everything) was given back to the LP officer and i was told that a letter would be mailed to me about a fine. and IF walmart chooses to pursue further action, i would have to appear in court. i thought i would be escorted out in cuffs but instead, they just let me go.

another thing is that when i turned 16 when i was living in new york, i was hanging out with some bad crowd and was dared into shoplifting (at duane reade) a very stupid mistake and i got caught. i barely remember that hideous incident. i believe because i was a minor they just sent that letter to my parents and i believe we just had to pay some amount and i didn't have to show up in court or anything.

now i have these very important questions and i've been getting mixed answers about it online.
    1) being that i'm NOT A MINOR would that go on my permanent record and would it show up on my future endeavors (jobs, school and such)
    2) what would happen to that picture of me that they took? would that be just on that walmart or EVERY walmart nationwide?
    3) if i have to pay (which i would, i want to put this all behind me) how pertinent is getting a lawyer? can i make do with just myself paying for everything or do i have to get a lawyer? i mean does getting a lawyer mean i can have that permanently erased from my records or not?
    4) can i avoid going to court at all by simply paying? or either way, do i still have to pay and go to court?
    5) because i got caught when i was 16, does this mean today was a second offense? i mean logically yes but because i didn't have to go to court and wasn't arrested or anything, how would this impact my current situation now?
    6) they also asked about my employment. what does that mean? that they would also be notified??

please help. this is a big mistake and i just want to put it all behind me. please help before i get overwhelmed with conflicting informations. thank you.
