Unhappy Police Want a Statement About Participation in a Bar Fight, Serious Injuries

My question involves criminal law for the state of: CO

Me and my friend were at a bar last week and were involved in a fight. It started when a guy punched my friend in the face at the entrance of the bar. The fight went down the steps and into the parking lot. I went to the fight in an attempt to break it up, but was being hit from behind by the girlfriend of the individual fighting my friend. I explained that I was trying to break it up. I then tried to separate the two again and was punched in the face by the person fighting my friend. I tried to get control of the guys hands to stop him swinging and stop the fight. The next thing I remember is getting up, bleeding profusely from deep lacerations above my eye and on the top of my head. The fight was over between the guy and my friend so we walked back to the place we were staying for the week. When I got to the residence we were staying in, I realized how deep the cuts were and went to the hospital. The doctors said it had to be some sort of weapon (beer bottle of a knife) because of the nature of the wounds. The cops came and got my statement and said that two other people were in the hospital (the guy and someone with a stab wound). I'm not sure if that was true or not. That was the last that I've heard of it until today. A detective called and said that he would like to sit down with me and get my version of events. I live far from where this occurred, so I was thinking of calling and speaking over the phone. I'm wondering if I should be worried. Neither me or my friend had any weapons. I'm not sure what happened in the time that I don't remember. Also I'm wondering if I have to give the detective my friends information. I told them in the hospital that it was my friend. Thank you for your comments.

You are in a quandary. You could be both a suspect and a victim here. If you do not cooperate and give a statement, then you can forget about being a victim. If you do cooperate and give a statement, it might be used against you later on.

You might want to consider talking to an attorney prior to speaking to the police.
