Default Using College Names in an E-Book

    Hello,

I'm currently mulling the idea of creating an E-Book for high schoolers who are attempting to choose the college of their dreams. It would be similar to a Princeton Review type setup, yet it would be exclusively an E-Book which would be put together from reviews that would be sent in by current college students.

My idea is basically to pay each reviewer $5 to answer a set of questions, then choose the best reviews and compile the E-Book. However, the question I have is pertaining to the legality of mentioning individual college names. Obviously the book would not be helpful unless I can name the actual schools being reviewed. Would I have to ask permission to do such as thing, or is the name of a college allowed to be used in such a publication?

Would it be copyright infringement of some sort to have a book of college reviews from current students? If so, would there be anyway around this? Thank you for your time and I appreciate any responses.

For names we're talking trademarks, not copyright. You cannot copyright a name.

As you can see from the thousands upon thousands of books, sites and other resources that review colleges, products, etc., you do not have to obtain permission from a trademark holder in order to share a review. If you are working with somebody else's actual trademark, it makes sense to use the "™" symbol with acknowledgement of who owns the mark.

By the way, I wouldn't pursue this matter.

Your respondents are going to be either very positive or very negative about the university. Asking opinions without knowing the source of those opinions has dubious value.

In other words... I tell you that a certain car is the one you should buy because I think it is perfect for you.... how do you know upon what I base my decision? Are you going to even ask the students that respond to provide proof that they are students?
