I am a 29 year old male who lives in Tucson ,Az who was physically abused about 20 years ago in Waterloo ,Ia. I am interested in persuing the individual responsable and possibly suing him. I don't have the $ for a lawyer and I am currently applying for legal aid .Presently I am wondering if I should contact the authorities where he lives .What steps should I take any advise?

    My response:

You have probably unwittingly, and undoubtedly, allowed the Statute of Limitations to expire. The Statute started to tick on your 18th birthday, and you allowed 11 more years to pass before taking any action. Depending upon what your definition of "abuse" may be; e.g., hitting you, or sexually abusing you, you can still call the District Attorney's office in Waterloo, Iowa, to give them the full facts and your definition, to find out for sure if the Statute of Limitations has expired. I fear it has.

Contact the police department first. I understand it will not be easy. Use your strength to appear and give them the information. I look at what you are doing is very important because you are also helping this guy get locked up from commiting other crimes. If any authories offer you a hard time I would recommend you go to the news media (keeping your idenity unknown) it might help other step forward.
