Default Google Inc. Defective Search Results

    Hello,

My name was in a few defamatory articles posted on the web.
My name was removed more than 2 years ago by the sites admins, they've confirmed it to me and I've checked this on the visual page and in its source code.
Google web search still returns this article's titles for my name search as most relevant although if you click the details and open the page you will not find my name there.
In the mean time Google has crawled and re-crawled the sites were this pages are but still didn't changed its search index by dropping them out of its search results.
What can I do about it ? Can I sue them for it ? The presence of those titles is causing me great professional problems.

    Thank you for your answers,
    RB

    You're in what U.S. state?

When you click on Google's cache, does it show your name on the page or does it indicate that your name only appears on pages that link to that page?

    Hello Aaron,

I am not from US but I think this matter is subject to US law.

My name isn't in the cache since 2 years but in the cache version of the page it says in my language something that would translate in English like this: "this terms appear just in the links that point to this page".

    Thanks for reply!

If you think this matter is subject to U.S. law, although defamation laws vary by state you should expect that you're out of luck. I know of no laws in any state that would allow you to sue Google for this and, even assuming there were one, I would expect it to be preempted by federal law. If you have a case, it would be against the person who posted the allegedly defamatory information - and it's quite possible that any such case is time barred by now.

If your name appears on pages linking to the page that used to contain negative information about you, such that it remains indexed for your name in Google, find those pages and ask that your name be removed from them.

Google has been in conflict with many so-called 'people search' sites.

There's been many complains of people getting search results from a site named 123people.com. After Google 'Farmer' update their traffic fell by 2/3rds (you can check here, I wish I had access to the comscore index for a more accurate estimation).

This is the bad thing about Google, they basically index EVERYTHING. So if Google indexed something private about you and you later remove it, some third party site like the one mentioned above (and many more available here, note to mods: not sure why you removed my reference to this site previously, can I get a decent explanation?). That's one big flaw with the web IMO...once you get public you never go back...as many say.

    WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

Be extra careful about releasing anything private about you online.

Public Facebook profile? Check if anything's public. Age? Location? (Drunk) pictures?

If you don't do this, some third party service is going to probably grab your info and then you'll have to beg and go to each and single website and ask for it to be removed.

    Hope this helped.
