My question involves a security deposit in the State of: NJ
I moved out of my apartment a month ago and still have not received my security deposit. I was supposed to meet the landlord the the next day to turn in the keys, but he wasn't around when I showed up. his partner (the other landlord) told me that he wasn't around and confirmed the address to send the deposit. New tenants moved into the apartment two days later. I still have the keys, but have not received the deposit. Can the landlord keep the deposit since the keys were not officially turned in? Doesn't a new tenant moving in signal that possession of the apartment was taken back by the landlord? I am going to speak to the landlord today, but I want to be prepared fro any possible shenanigans. Yes, I still have the keys.
